Added the Centenary Album of Herman Gyllenhaal (1821-1912). The photographs in this collection come from an album put together in 1921 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Herman Gyllenhaal. Most likely the album was compiled by Herman's daughter Sophia Gyllenhaal. The photos in Uppsala were mainly taken by Hedvig Gyllenhaal, another of Herman's daughters, and the photos at Tropa were probably taken by Thor Herman Odencrantz (1849-1934). The album now resides in the Gyllenhaal family archive in Stockholm.

Added the photograph album of Hedvig Gyllenhaal. The photographs in this collection come from an album owned by Hedvig Julia Elisabet Gyllenhaal (1863-1931), who lived in Uppsala, Sweden. Hedvig was the third daughter of Lars Herman Gyllenhaal (1821-1912) and Maria Catharina Christina Aspegren (1832-1873). Hedvig herself never married, and her album ended up in the Gyllenhaal Family Archive in Stockholm, in the home of her nephew Carl-Gustaf Gyllenhaal and his wife Inger. In 2001 their son Olle Gyllenhaal in Göteborg scanned the pages of the album into the computer as .jpg files and has, together with his parents, attempted to identify the individuals pictured. Most of the photographs date to the 19th century, with a few dating to the early part of the 20th century.

Added the Autobiography of Swain Nelson. The importance of Swain Nelson for the Gyllenhaal Family Tree Project lies in the fact that Swain's eldest daughter Selma married Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal (1842-1905), the Swedish immigrant who became the patriarch of the American branch of the Gyllenhaal family. The Gyllenhaal and Nelson families were very closely connected.

Added a Search button to the menu bar. This will lead to a search engine (Pico Search) that has indexed the entire site. Also added a hyperlinked thumbnail index of the photographs in the Marcia Henderson Pendleton Collection. This will make it much easier to navigate through the photos.

Added a biography of Carl Henrik Gyllenhaal (1788-1857), recently translated from the Swedish by Olle Gyllenhaal, who lives in Gothenburg, Sweden. Carl Henrik was the family's first Baron, and one of the most controversial figures in Gyllenhaal family history.

Added the 1818 portrait of Leonard Gyllenhaal to the Sources section. It was painted when Leonard was 66 years old by Per Krafft. It nows hangs in the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Added a large collection of early Gyllenhaal photographs to the Sources section, which I call the Marcia Henderson Pendleton Collection. Most of the 89 photographs in this collection come from a late 19th century photo album titled "Seymour and Annie." Seymour was the son of Swain and Sophia Nelson and the brother-in-law of Anders Gyllenhaal. The album is now owned by Jennifer Pendleton Redmile (Charlotte, North Carolina), and the loose photographs by her mother Marcia Henderson Pendleton (Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania). The individuals pictured are almost all Nelsons and Gyllenhaals from Chicago and (later) Glenview, Illinois, with a few other relatives and friends included. A few of the photographs were taken in Sweden. Both the Nelsons and Gyllenhaals were Swedish-American, and undoubtedly photographs were occasionally exchanged with Swedish relatives along with letters.

Added pictures of two 18th/19th century seal stamps with Gyllenhaal coats of arms to the Gyllenhaal Coats of Arms page.

Added a Links page, and submitted the site for membership in the Nordic-American Web Ring.

Added a number of old photographs from Sweden to the Sources page. The arrangements for scanning these photos were made by Carl-Gunnar von Delwig, of Habo, Sweden. Carl-Gunnar is the webmaster's third cousin, being descended from Anna Maria Lovisa Gyllenhaal (1845-1909), Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal's sister. These photos fill an important gap in the photo archives of the Gyllenhaal Family Tree Project.

Today our Web site was given the "Links2Go 'Swedish Genealogy' Award." According to the e-mail notice, "Out of 24 pages selected as Key Resources for the Swedish Genealogy topic, your page ranked 14th." I don't think this particular award will catch on. For one thing, the colors on their award icon seem to have been designed to offend the sensibilities of any reasonable Web designer. Can you imagine a color scheme that the icon below would NOT clash with? I can't see many people putting it on their Web pages, except maybe in the "What's New" section ;-)

That having been said, if you click on the icon below you will find some useful links for Swedish genealogy.

The new Gyllenhaal Family Tree Project Web site officially opens today. The old site has been closed down, and the old articles have been reformatted and improved before being moved to the new site. Most of the pictures have been rescanned and various corrections and additions have been made. In particular, the Gyllenhaal Coats of Arms page has been expanded with many new pictures added, the Nils Gunnesson Gyllenhaal page has been turned into a full-length article, and a little article has been added on The Leonard Medal. There is also a new article called Charles Pendleton Gyllenhaal: The War Years (CPG was the webmaster's Dad).
